The Amuri-Ureia Fishing Association’s winning 65kg yellowfin tuna reeled in by the women on board “Baby Mac” in the Mamas Queen’s Birthday tournament. PC: MAFI KATU-RAGA. 21060920.In a first, the mamas led the way in the inaugural Queen’s Birthday Mamas fishing tournament, with the winners netting a hefty yellowfin during the tournament which was held in Aitutaki earlier this week.
The
Amuri-Ureia Fishing Association inaugural Queen’s Birthday Mamas fishing
tournament in Aitutaki was declared a success with a 65 kilogram yellowfin tuna
reeled in by Pitonga Henry, Taiono Tuakana and Mafi Katu-Raga on board “Baby
Mac”.

In
Aitutaki on Monday, 44 keen fishing Mamas went out to sea, delegated among the
11 boats.

Since
the long weekend annual competition started eight years ago, it was the first
time the women took on the challenge to participate. Previous years only the
Papas, men and sons compete.

“It
was a great day for our club to see the women arrive back on shore with catches
and those who returned without fish, but still smiling,” Retire Puapii said.

The
children also joined in, casting in lagoon catches that went straight onto the
barbeque for the wrap up kaikai, he added.

The
results for Amuri-Ureia Fishing Association Queens Birthday Mamas tournament
“Tuna - all species” are as follows: Heaviest Tuna - “Baby Mac” yellowfin tuna
65kg; Total Aggregate - “Baby Mac” with 73kg; Heaviest other species - “Baby
Mac” with an 8kg Mahimahi; 4. First Boat in - “Scarlet”; No Catch -  Kaparata, Story, Reel Action, Tari Manga,
Aunty Nga, Wet n Wild.

In
the children’s section: Boys 1st Children's Boys - Ben Kiria 10kg, 2nd  Arani Henry and DJ Tare 9kg, 3rd Taivero
Henry 6kg. Girls category: 1st Nia Onu 6kg, 2nd Roimata George 3kg.

The
club extends a big meitaki atupaka to all who contributed to the  eventful day, “from our children, parents,
papas, mamas and the helpers.”

The
Mamas tuna catch certainly exceeded the heaviest winning weight of the Cook
Islands Game Fishing Clubs (CIGFC) Don Beer Snr Memorial Heaviest Tuna fishing
tournament that was held on Rarotonga over the weekend.

Kerry Murray with angler Ola Nyheim took out the top prize in the two day CIGFC Don Beer Snr Memorial Heaviest Tuna fishing tournament with a 36kg yellowfin tuna. 21060914

In
that competition, a 36kg yellowfin tuna caught by Skipper Kerry Murray with
angler Ola Nyheim claimed top prize.

two day Don Beer Snr Memorial Heaviest Tuna fishing tournament results are as
