MANSFIELD -- The Mansfield Power Squadron recently held its annual education and awards picnic.The organization is a local nonprofit, aligned with the United States Power Squadron/America's Boating Club, in promoting boating safety and education. National Boating Safety Week was May 22 through 28.Jay Wells of Ashland received the Milliken-Brewer Award for excellence in boating education instruction. Jay instructed three courses: Marine Electrical Systems, Marine Communication Systems, and Electronic Navigation. Jay Wells is also the current commander of the Mansfield Power Squadron (MPS).Tom Etzwiler of Mansfield was recognized for achieving 50 merit marks obtained during his 52 years of membership. Tom has also instructed the Weather course.Shirley Fort of Mansfield was recognized for her many years of leadership as the Squadron Educational Officer and for her tireless dedication to the squadron.Other boating courses offered by the MPS, besides those already mentioned include: America's Boating Course (ABC), Boat Handling, Marine Navigation, Advanced Marine Navigation, Offshore Navigation, Celestial Navigation, Engine Maintenance, Sail, Radar for Boaters, Cruising and Cruise Planning, along with numerous seminar topics.Boating courses generally run 6 to 8 weeks in length, while seminars last about 2 to 4 hours.Dan and Lynn Fortman of Shelby, and Dennis and Denise Tenison of Lexington were recognized for receiving Educational Achievement Awardsand the status of Senior Navigators (SN) from the United States Power Squadron (USPS).
