Semi-custom yacht building is not always successful because of the challenges of planning prior to build in terms of usability, performance and systems. LA LUNA has delivered on the brief given to designer Bill Dixon by her owner to provide a fast, capable and easily handled world cruising yacht.
LA LUNA is immediately recognisable because of the spacious deck saloon and flush deck forwards, together with a carbon spar and easy to use in-boom furling. It was key for the owner that she had really good accommodation and this was delivered with a galley and superb crew quarter forward of this. Aft of the deck saloon, which also houses a good navigation station, a vast owners’ cabin, excellent VIP double with en-suite and a large upper and lower berth cabin. The engine room is accessed from the corridor leading aft to guest and owner accommodation. Reducing sound was also a key part of the design brief and this has been accomplished by effectively soundproofing the interior accommodation and engine room.
The owners’ representative was at King Marine for much of the build and the detailing of joinery and systems is superb. There are many lovely additional features that only become apparent during a detailed inspection.
The cockpit offers good access for control of the yacht under sail as well as being a great entertaining space with a central cockpit with fridge for alfresco entertaining either at sea or at rest. With her flush hatches and clear decks, the decks are both easy to work and also look fresh and contemporary.
The construction of LA LUNA is carefully executed and high tech, making her light, yet very strong and her Hall carbon Spar is robust and the in-boom furling completes the picture with the weight in the right place.
She has been in the same ownership since build. She has been used for private use and has sailed fast and safely, crossing oceans without fuss. She has always been stored when not in use in a totally decommissioned state to ensure that the systems and structure are properly preserved, and her overall cover has been put to good use.
LA LUNA sailed from Buenos Aires to Palma via Rio and then through the Caribbean. She then cruised the Western and Eastern Mediterranean. In 2010/11 she sailed to the Caribbean and back. On the return she made passage from Antigua to Palma in only 19 days which included several days when there was no wind. She was laid up in 2012 and 2013 and was used only lightly in 2014. In 2015, she left Northern Europe for the Mediterranean and then did the winter season in Antigua & BVIs. She has been based in the Western Mediterranean since then being used for relaxing family use. Unfortunately, her owners now lack the time to use her. She is maintained under full guardiennage and ready for her new owner, but has no current cruising programme.
LA LUNA’s interior was refreshed in 2016 and she is currently looked after by the Service Team at Berthon Spain. Early 2021 has seen a significant service period to prepare the yacht for the new season. Work carried out includes;
Lift out, antifouling and new zincs.
Drop rudder and replace rudder bearings.
Full hull polish.
Full service of all through hull fittings.
Repairs to transom paintwork.
Repairs to shore power connections.
Repair of aft hatch.
Repair of water heater.
Dropping of rig with full NDT test of PBO rigging (report available).
Repainting with clear coat of rigging and areas of the rig which had deteriorated.
Repaint of main boom.
Repairs to the mast and genoa furler track and vang.
Full service of Code 0, mainsail, jib.
This refresh cost over €75,000 and will have her sailing reliably in 2021.
